All local groups are responsible for managing their own funds. Membership fees from individuals, donations, regular giving programs, foundations and fundraising ventures are the main income source of most local groups. National campaigns and functions such as the magazine Chain Reaction and Wild Spaces film festival rely on the following sources of income: individual donations, foundations, merchandise, and bequests. FoE Australia currently receives no government or corporate funding.

Friends of the Earth is a Charitable Institution and is registered as having Deductible Gift Recipient status, meaning it can provide tax deductible receipts for donations over $2.
