A nuclear weapons free world is not only possible, but inevitable. The question is whether we will abolish them before these weapons are used again. We have banned landmines, chemical and biological weapons, it's now to ban the world's worst weapon of terror - nuclear weapons.
Nuclear weapons remain a key threat to our earth, health and survival. There are currently 27,000 weapons in the arsenals of 9 countries, enough to blow up the world several times over, and nuclear weapons states are spending billions on weapons modernisation programs. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists insist we are on the brink of a second nuclear age, with climate change and the threats of nuclear weapons twin threats to human survival.

In this time, we must remember the achievements of the peace and anti-nuclear movement - we have halved the number of warheads and are close to a complete global ban on weapons testing. To learn more: http://www.icanw.org/we-can
ICAN is the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, launched in April around the world, by the Medical Association for Prevention of War and their international counterparts. ICAN challenges us to work together to redouble our efforts towards nuclear disarmament. FOE Australia have recently joined ICAN, alongside other NGO's and faith based organisations. For nations to get serious about disarmament, they need to know that people demand it. Australia, as a middle-power and uranium exporting nation has a moral obligation to play a key role in disarmament efforts. Australia has played this role before - in the Canberra Commission report in 1996 and our active role in the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty negotiations.
ICAN is one way to assert this pressure on Governments.
