Our climate campaign in 2009

For many years our climate justice campaign has forged the agenda on the human rights dimensions of climate change, most notably in the realm of climate refugees. In recent times, we have been greatly increasing the work we do on mitigation – that is, reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. We have active climate campaigns focused on coal at the state or regional level in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

So, at our recent national meeting we held a strategy session to further develop our shared climate campaigning. A key element of this involved agreeing to put our local anti-coal work into a national campaign. We prioritised five areas of activity for 2009:

    * campaigns against existing coal mining and plans for expansion,
    * climate refugees,
    * trade unions/ just transitions and green jobs,
    * false solutions (such as agrofuels),
    * helping to build the climate movement.

We only have one liveable planet. Earth. It's our home and our future. And at the moment, it's facing its gravest threat for millennia. What we do in the next 20 years will determine whether people and other species can still survive here in 100, 200 or 1000 years.

Most people in Australia are now seriously concerned about climate change. They know it's real and they know that humans have caused it. They feel a responsibility for trying to stop it.

This website is here to help you to make informed choices about what to do about climate change.

The science is in looks at why the earth is warming and some of the likely impacts of this.

The debate is over looks at how some common myths about climate change have been disproved.

The time to act is now talks about the actions we need to take – at all levels of society, industry and government – to prevent climate change getting completely out of control.
