The decision by the Department of Resource Management to shut down Cougar Energy's underground coal gasification (UCG) plant at Kingaroy is welcome but far too late. In fact, this plant and two others like it should never have been given the go-ahead by the Queensland Government in the first place given what is known (and what is not known) about the impacts of this technology.
Australia must commit to deep emissions cuts in the Copenhagen Accord
As we know, the Copenhagen talks ended without agreement to set binding emissions reduction targets. The accord will list the voluntary emissions reduction targets by developed and developing countries, in Annexes to the main document. Countries are asked to provide their target by February 1, 2010. Please join our action alert, and demand that Australia commit to deep emissions reductions targets in its February commitment.
