Dear Mr Rudd,
We need deep targets and climate justice at Copenhagen
Australia is already being hit by climate change: bush fires, floods and droughts are only going to get worse unless we take strong global action. Our Pacific neighbours - already threatened by sea level rise - have been joined by over 50 countries in setting a benchmark for how much carbon pollution can be in the atmosphere. Australia should join them at Copenhagen and set a global target well below 350 ppm. If adopted globally, the current Australian 450 target would devastate the planet.
Targets are just the beginning. Any agreement must be based on climate justice, with rich countries doing the heavy lifting because we have caused three-quarters of the pollution.
Too many of the solutions being proposed by Australia will just outsource pollution to poor countries, hurting local communities. Australia can show it is serious about climate change by declaring a national moratorium on coal power and coal mining and implementing a just transition for workers in the coal industry.
This year I will be working in my community to promote climate justice. I call on you to ensure our government does the same by unconditionally committing Australia to a minimum of 40% cuts in emissions by 2020 and a global target well below 350 ppm of carbon dioxide.
Yours sincerely
