Quick Edition - September 2011

hello all
a quick update from Friends of the Earth of two significant actions:

  • our call for a ban on coal seam gas (CSG) in Victoria and an attached 'road show' of public forums,
  • a call for submissions into a proposed uranium mine in WA.

many thanks
regards
Cam Walker

CSG roadshow

Central and western Victoria, October 3 – 7, 2011.

Warrnambool, Colac, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne

This spring FoE is hosting a series of forums to highlight the threat posed by Coal Seam Gas (CSG), coal, and shale gas across rural Victoria.

It will feature Drew Hutton from Queensland.

Drew is a leading figure in the campaign against CSG in that state, is the key spokesperson for Friends of the Earth on the issue, and the president of the Lock the Gate Alliance.

We hope to use the roadshow to highlight the risks of new fossil fuel expansion to landscapes, ground water, communities and food security. New fossil fuel operations will also have a massive climate change impact. Each forum will also feature a speaker who will outline landholders rights when it comes to CSG and coal exploration and mining.

We hope to build on our call for the state government to ban all new fossil fuel projects. See here for full details: http://www.melbourne.foe.org.au/?q=node/983

GETTING INVOLVED

We want to invite interested people to join us for a strategy session to begin planning a broad-based community campaign against new coal and CSG operations. This might lead to the formal development of a Victorian ‘Lock the Gate’ alliance.

The options we have to meet are:

  • Wed Oct 5, in the afternoon, in Ballarat
  • Thurs Oct 6, in the afternoon, in Geelong
  • Fri Oct 7, in the afternoon, in Melbourne.

If you are interested, please contact Cam, indicating what day/s work best for you and we will schedule a time that works best for most people. If you would simply like to go on the minutes list for the outcome of this meeting, please let Cam know.

FoE campaign against CSG

new uranium mine in WA?

Toro Energy has submitted an application to build Western Australia's first uranium mine, at Wiluna, the beginning of WA's iconic Canning Stock Route. With the WA Labor Opposition recently reaffirming its opposition to uranium mining, the Toro application has far-reaching ramifications. Please spare a minute to submit a response to Toro's application.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION

The construction of WA's first uranium mine is likely to be the 'thin edge of the wedge' whereas a strong show of public opposition can significantly increase the likelihood of keeping WA uranium-free. That, in turn, is important in the context of the national debate over uranium mining.

Please spare a minute to submit a response to Toro's application via the website of the Conservation Council of Western Australia.
