This week students, environmentalists and citizens Australia-wide will engage in actions to highlight the seriousness of the climate change emergency.
Spurred by the publication of the Garnaut Report into climate change
in Australia, people across the country are standing up to demand
stronger limits to GHG emissions and bigger targets for renewables as
well as systemic and lifestyle changes. The Garnaut report undersells
the risks to Queensland world heritage Great Barrier Reef as well as
setting targets too low.
Spokesperson and organiser, John Mackenzie from Friends of the Earth Brisbane explained that "We have a small window of opportunity between now and when Garnaut's recommendations become our national policy and international negotiating position. The Climate Emergency Week is being organised precisely to send a clear message to governments across the country that Australians are prepared to accept higher emission targets to protect and preserve our national heritage. There is too much at stake to prioritise economic expediency over our future."
In Queensland, the countries biggest coal producing state and biggest coal producers in the world, communities will rally against government inaction and toadying to the coal industry.
