Fund raiser & events co-ordinator position
1.5 day a week for six months
Friends of the Earth Melbourne is seeking a part time fund-raiser and events co-ordinator.
The position is 1.5 days a week, initially for six months (July – December 2008).
This position would collaborate with existing fund raisers at FoEM to build our ability to engage in strategic fund raising opportunities.
About Friends of the Earth
Friends of the Earth Melbourne (FoE M) Inc. is a community based activist organisation located in Collingwood. It has been active on environmental and social justice campaigns for more than 35 years. It is a non-hierarchical, collective – based organisation which operates on the understanding that environmental issues need to be addressed in their full human rights and political context.
Key responsibilities
The two core responsibilities would be:
-
to organise a minimum of two fund raising events during the first six months of employment (this could be any form of event, such as a band or film night, a raffle, or other public event that generates funds)
-
to increase our profile, and hence campaigning and fund-raising ability, through the creation of strategic relationships with appropriate partners. This might include ethical traders or companies, identifying new fund raising opportunities from the philanthropic sector, making approaches to performers or prominent Australian's, or taking advantage of external events that have an environmental focus.
job description
Responsibilities of the Fund-raiser would be, as part of the office collective, to work to achieve the following:
-
Early on, create basic a work plan outlining the steps proposed to raise the fund-raising target. It is understood that this plan would be a work in progress and evolve over time
-
plan and host at least two fund raisers for FoE Melbourne before December 2008
-
in conjunction with the campaigns co-ordinator and FoEM climate justice group, help co-ordinate the 2008 'solutions to climate change' community festival (planned for spring 2008)
-
build on the existing FoEM fund raising plan to create and implement a realistic fund-raising program that is long-lasting, and that maintains the ethical guidelines and principles of FoE, based on new relationships and taking advantage of new fund raising and profile raising opportunities.
-
continually identify and respond to new funding and profile-raising opportunities for FoE (this may include working with FoE groups overseas to implement previously successful fund raising projects in the Australian context)
-
document work performed so that it is easy for others to follow.
Fund-raising target
It is anticipated that the worker would seek to generate a minimum of $25,000 during the six months of employment. If this target were achieved early in the employment, there is a possibility to expand the position to two days a week.
co-ordination and support
The individual FoEM campaign collectives are responsible for their own fund raising. At present, most are heavily reliant on foundations for funding although a variety of approaches are used. Co-ordination of funding applications is carried out by the campaigns coordinator. The new fund raiser would not be responsible for grant writing. The worker may decide to collaborate on shared fund-raising activity with one or more of the campaign collectives (anti nuclear and clean energy, Barmah Millewa, climate justice and coal campaign, real food).
Wages and conditions
The fund raiser would work as part of the FoE Melbourne office collective. The other current members of the collective are the campaigns coordinator, finance manager and membership development officer. This collective will be an integral partner and source of support for the work undertaken.
The fund raiser would also need to develop working relationships with the nuclear and climate justice fund raiser at FoEM.
The position is paid at the standard FoE daily rate and accrues all benefits on a pro rata basis.
It would be reviewed at the end of the six months, with a view to making it a permanent position at 2 days/ week.
