Support the ALP 'no new uranium mines policy'

An urgent action alert current till the end of April 2007

Support the ALP 'no new uranium mines policy'

The ALP has a long standing policy of 'no new uranium mines'. This policy was intended to phase out uranium mining in Australia because the production of uranium and its use in the nuclear fuel cycle creates threats to human health and the local environment and generates high level radioactive waste and materials that can be used for nuclear weapons production.

Despite the dangers of uranium mining and the growing problems of radioactive waste and nuclear weapons proliferation risks, there has been a challenge from within the ALP to review this policy and it could be overturned at the ALP national conference early next year.

Morgan polls conducted last year recorded 70% of Australians opposed an expansion of uranium mining.

It's important at this time to let the ALP know that the dangers have not gone away, in fact they are more pressing than ever and the policy should stand.
