Friends of the Earth Brisbane Information-Technology and Communications team is seeking expressions of interest from persons with excellent IT System Administration skills with an interest in joining our team.

Background

Friends of the Earth Brisbane is a community based social change organisation working towards an ecologically sustainable and socially just future. Campaigning on environmental and social justice issues of: local, national and international significance. In doing so the organisation is required to provide and maintain various information and communication technologies to support its workers, both within the physical office and externally.

Friends of the Earth Brisbane is a member organisation of Friends of the Earth Australia, which consists of 11 local groups and various regional contacts. Via this relationship we are actively involved in all projects of the national Information-Technology and Communications team.


Position Objectives

Primary activities of the position are based on three objectives:

  1. Maintain all current IT infrastructure systems and operating environments by providing timely support response to the team.
  2. Research and initiate new infrastructure systems, operating environments and tools to enhance user accessibility and performance
  3. Work collaboratively with the existing ITC team to meet the objectives listed above

Key requirements of this position will be to work collaboratively with the existing team, systems and identified action priorities. The current infrastructure consists of three primary servers that are hosted internally and externally, providing services to the both internal offices users and external remote users. Supporting software environments, including: LDAP, Rsync, IPSec/VPN Connections, IMAP Mail hosts, Asterisk VoIP, CRM/ERP, Apache and Zope Web servers

The ITC team is seeking a person to work from Brisbane, partnering with two existed system administrators located in Melbourne.


What type of person are we after

We are seeking an experienced person with medium to high level knowledge and experience in system administration of UNIX based platforms, preferably including Debian. Ideally we would like someone to commit for at least one year to maintain consistency in programme requirements, team relations and organisational memory.

The Friends of the Earth Information-Technology and Communications team is made up of eight IT professionals who contribute time in order to ‘do their part’ working for a better society and to extend their professional skill base via the challenges presented by this work. Our team knowledge platform ranges from system administration, software engineers, coders, database designers, web developers and graphic designers.


How we work

Basically we are after a self motivated doer who has the time to offer to enhance the IT infrastructure of Friends of the Earth. It is an excellent challenge, the team are all great people who acknowledge and respect the various skills each embodies.

The National team works mostly via the internet and formally meets monthly for brainstorming and reporting but in general we are avid skypers and emailers. Our main team clusters are in Brisbane and Melbourne, with members also located in Adelaide and Thailand. This position supports a health team of people working from the Brisbane office.
