Public interest the big loser in nanotechnology debate
Queensland Conservation Council (QCC) and Friends of the Earth (FoE) today warned that tomorrow’s Science in Parliament briefing on nanotechnology, organised by Queensland’s Chief Scientist, shows unacceptable pro-industry bias and ignores nanotechnology’s serious new risks.
Rudd and Clark must act on Pacific climate displacement
Over 100 representatives of non-government organisations from across the Asia-Pacific - including the main Pacific peak bodies and NGOs - have made an urgent call for Australian PM Kevin Rudd and NZ PM Helen Clark to do more to help the Pacific with climate change, in particular increased immigration and resettlement.
Proposed Coal Port in QLD Threatens Unique Wetlands, Local Drinking Water
Friends of the Earth Brisbane (FoEB) and the Shoalwater Bay Wilderness Awareness Group (SWAG) reject the proposed coal port near Yeppoon. The port proposal currently being fast-tracked by Premier Bligh is a serious threat to the unique RAMSAR listed wetland area and the cleanliness of local residents drinking water. The port, in conjunction with the three proposed coal mines, is being pursued at cost to local and global environment and will contribute to climate change.
Australia’s first nanotechnology public “dialogue” accused of industry bias
Friends of the Earth on August 5 accused the Queensland government of unacceptable industry bias in its handling of Australia’s first ever attempt to involve members of the public in development of nanotechnology policy recommendations. Of the many members of the “Nanodialogues”, initiated this week, there is no other representation from nanotechnology stakeholders who have been critical, eg environment, health, civil liberties, social justice groups, unions, or ethicists.

Climate Camp Fines Fund
In July 2008, over a thousand people at Australia's first Camp for Climate Action peacefully blockaded the world's largest coal exporting port in Newcastle. It was an incredible day. Children led the march along the edge of the coal rail line, until we held a five minute silent vigil in front of the massive coal stockpiles. Then, one by one, small groups of people made their way over or under the fence and onto the tracks.
Climate and Coal Campaign
The Friends of the Earth climate and coal campaign works to bring about necessary changes in lifestyle, society, industry and policy to halt dangerous climate change. Our focus is on achieving deep cuts to our greenhouse gas pollution emissions, and a moratorium on all new coal fired power stations (including the proposed HRL coal power station in Victoria) with a just transition to renewable energy solutions.
Failure is the option chosen by Minister Wong
Despite claiming “failure is not an option” Minister Penny Wong has today set out a plan for failure according to Friends of the Earth Australia

Radioactive River?
Revelations that radioactive waste may have been entering the Yarra River for decades has prompted some of Victoria’s major environment groups, including Friends of the Earth, to support the call for Premier Brumby and the EPA to immediately halt Yarra dredging until an investigation has been completed.

Shell faces legal action in the Netherlands over Nigerian pollution
Dutch lawyers representing the communities affected by Shells operations in the Niger Delta have summoned Shell to clarify its role concerning oil spills. palm oil campaign
Demand for palm oil, a vegetable oil present in 1 in 10 supermarket products, is the most significant cause of rainforest loss in Malaysia and Indonesia. Palm oil plantations destroy biodiversity and are associated with human rights violations and worker exploitation. In Indonesia, the area of land occupied by palm oil plantations has doubled in the last 10 years. This habitat destruction threatens endangered species like the orangutan and Sumatran tiger with extinction. This Palm Oil campaign is a collaboration between FoE, Rainforest Information Centre, Australian Orangutan Project and Borneo Orangutan Project.

the sustainable supermarket!
Friends of the Earth Australia is currently developing a campaign aimed at delivering a major change in the way food and groceries in Australia are sold. The campaign will include the development of a shopping guide to help people make informed and ethical choices and in spring 2008, FoE will pilot our first ‘sustainable supermarket’ - a weekend Eco-Market that will provide at least 70% of the goods you can find in a traditional supermarket.
