Action Alert: International day of Action
against Exxon-Mobil (Mobil) July 11
Thousands of protesters in
fifteen different countries will take part in the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF
ACTION against the transnational oil company EXXON-MOBIL tomorrow July
11th, 2001.
In Melbourne, protesters will hang banners over key arterial routes and
then target Mobil service stations in the federal seat of Aston where
a by election will be held this Saturday.
Australian protests will call attention to the Australian government's
pandering to the United States energy agenda, which in turn is driven
by the oil industry through massive political donations.
WHERE: Mobil, Cnr Burwood Highway and Stud Road, Wantirna South.
WHEN: 11.30am
WHY: Exxon-Mobil (Mobil) continues to fund greenhouse skeptics, has spent
millions on greenwash advertisements, was one of the top contributors
to George Bush's election, has been active in lobbying the US government
to reject the Kyoto Protocol, and invests virtually nothing in renewable
energy
ExxonMobil have been sued for continued human rights abuses in North
Aceh, Indonesia, where they have assisted Indonesian military and police
with the torture and imprisonment of independence activists
It is also one of the major proponents behind drilling in the Arctic
Refuge in Alaska.
