John Pilger to speak at Sydney peace rally

"John Pilger will join a number of prominent people to speak out against Australian involvement in a war on Iraq, Walk Against the War" spokesperson Pip Hinman said today.

Sharan Burrow, president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, John Howard, the actor, and Sheikh Taj Aldin Alhilali have been confirmed to address the peaceful rally on November 30. Other speakers representing different faiths are also scheduled to speak.

The Walk Against the War is part of a national weekend of action against the war on Iraq in which rallies are scheduled for eight cities across Australia.

John Pilger, prominent author and journalist, addressed the 400,000-strong peace rally in London on September 28. He joins a growing list of prominent people, including civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and actor Susan Sarandon in the US and Dr Rowan Williams, the next Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, who are taking a strong stand against the impending war.

John Pilger is also actively involved in the anti-war movement in London where he lives, and has commented favorably on its growing strength.

"For all the achievements of the movement against the Vietnam War, it did not get underway until four years after the Americans had invaded. Today, under countless banners, from the anti-globalisation movement to the Stop the War campaign, the new movement, drawing millions all over the world, may well be the greatest. We need it urgently."
