Prestige Oil Spill: The Story Behind The Story
One shot dead, hundreds arrested and beaten by security at Australian-owned mine in Indonesia
BRIMOB
paramilitary police acting as security for Newcrest Mining today shot
one person dead and arrested and beat many others of the Kao and Malifut
community who took part in a peaceful protest against the company's operations
on their land in Halmahera, North Maluku.
On
7 Jan 2004, over 800 local people marched and blockaded Newcrest's new
Toguraci gold mine site, which is operating without the agreement of the
community and contrary to Indonesian law which prohibits open-cut mining
in the Toguraci protected forest.
A coalition of NGOs has formed "Solidarity with the Kao and Malifut Community" and will today deliver the community's protest against deadly violence by mine security forces to KOMNAS HAM (Human Rights Comission) in Jakarta.
