Hiroshima Never Again
Hiroshima Day March Friday 6 Aug 6pm Town Hall Square, Sydney
Fifty-nine years ago today, without warning, the US dropped
a nuclear bomb on the city of Hiroshima, followed three days later by
one on Nagasaki.
According to Bronwyn Marks, chairperson of the Hiroshima Day Committee,
The impact of such a cataclysmic event must never be forgotten. - the
unimaginable death, destruction, and human misery, the burns, radiation
sickness, and the dislocation of so many lives. No country has the facilities
to deal with human suffering on such a monumental scale.¹
The commemoration of Hiroshima is not only to remember the victims but
to call for the abolition of all nuclear weapons, and to point to the
folly of the Howard government in supporting the development by the US
of a 'star wars' antimissile system.¹
According to Bronwyn Marks,
Such a shield will only lead to a new and more dangerous nuclear arms
race¹
According to Ms Marks:
The nuclear powers are obliged to reduce their nuclear arsenals until
they achieve their total and unequivocal elimination, and to commit themselves
to never being the first to use them. Until there is the will to do this,
currently non- nuclear states will seek to develop their own nuclear weapons¹
she said.
The Hiroshima Day rally will commence at 6pm Friday 6 August at Town Hall
Square, followed by a candlelit procession to Archibald Fountain. Speakers
include Greens councillor Chris Harris, Mark Lennon (NSW Labor Council)
James Courtney (Greenpeace) and Dr John Kay of the Greens.
