New climate change portfolio welcomed

November 29, 2006

Friends of the Earth welcomes the Victorian government announcement of a new  ‘super-portfolio’  covering  environment, water and climate change.

This expanded portfolio gives a positive signal regarding the emphasis the ALP places on the environment.

"Minister Thwaites has a  commitment to these issues and is well-placed to ensure the Victorian Government takes meaningful action on all key environmental concerns during its next term in office."

FoE notes, however, that environmentalists had been forced to blockade logging operations in East Gippsland within areas earmarked for protection in the National Parks package announced earlier this month.

FoE and other green groups are urging the Minister to implement an immediate moratorium on all areas that were included  in pre-election forest promises.

Minister Thwaites has indicated that climate and water will be key priorities in the next term. FoE urges him to introduce legislation  to cut greenhouse gas levels by at least 80% by 2050 from 1990 levels, with year-by-year reductions to achieve this target.
