Launch of new voice in Tasmanian green movement welcomed

The national environmental group Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA) warmly welcomes the public launch of Environment Tasmania. This new group will be launched tomorrow in Launceston.

“We live in a time where there is widespread mainstream awareness of environmental problems and overwhelming support for the work of environmental groups” said Cam Walker, national liaison officer for FoEA. “To have a broad-based conservation council operating in Tasmania will greatly increase the capacity of the movement, and hence its ability to secure a sustainable future for all Tasmanians”.

“Through the influence of issues like climate change, there is growing awareness of the global nature of environmental problems. This requires a response that is is well co-ordinated locally and connected nationally and more broadly into the global community. Having a representative conservation council working on a broad range of environmental concerns will further facilitate Tasmania achieving positive solutions to the problems we all face”.

“Environment Tasmania will broaden the existing work of green groups in Tasmania as well as providing strong links between groups in all parts of the state. We look forward to working closely with them”.
