Ferguson takes on local electorate in nuclear debate

Martin Ferguson, MP for the seat of Batman and ALP Primary Industry and Resources spokesperson, will debate nuclear expert Dr Jim Green from Friends of the Earth and Australian Greens member Chris Chaplin on Australia’s role in the international nuclear industry in a world environment day debate at Northcote Town Hall.

Ferguson has been controversially spearheading a push to change the ALP’s “no new mines” policy at the April 2007 ALP national conference.

Dr Green said: "It is disturbing that Ferguson is trying so hard to make Australia one of the worlds leading suppliers of uranium. This despite the fact that a recent Newspoll found that 78% of ALP voters oppose new uranium mines."

"Ferguson's statements on uranium safeguards have been totally wrong. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which is responsible for safeguarding Australian uranium, has itself admitted that its safeguards system is 'fairly limited' and cannot function effectively on its 'shoestring budget'. To be expanding the export of WMD feedstock in the form of uranium is irresponsible in a climate of increased concern over global terrorism."

"If Mr Ferguson wants to have a constructive debate with Australia’s best interests at heart, we need to address the urgent need to develop and fund Australia’s renewable energy sector. Australia is uniquely placed in its abundant resources of solar and wind energy potential," said Dr Green.
