FRIENDS OF THE EARTH CONDEMNS BRUMBY GOVERNMENT OVER NEW COAL POWER STATION

Friends of the Earth (FoE) today condemned the announcement by the Brumby Government to give approval to a new coal-fired power station in the La Trobe Valley.

FoE Climate Campaigner Louise Morris said the decision was a “dangerous step in the wrong direction in tackling climate change and escalating emissions. The decision to expand on our states reliance on coal for electricity is a disaster for the climate. ”

Ms Morris said the HRL brown coal-fired power station would emit between 2.4 and 2.7 million tonnes of C02 per year.

“HRL will have the same emissions level as a standard black coal power station,’’ Ms Morris said. “At a time when we know we must make deep cuts to our greenhouse gas pollution emissions our state government is being reckless with our future by approving the HRL coal fired power station.”

“This project has been beset by siting and financial uncertainty. Originally the HRL station was to cost $500 million to build. This budget has blown out to more than $750 million, $150 million of which has been supplied by taxpayers through State and Federal Labor Governments.

“If we’re serious about tackling runaway climate change we need a moratorium on all new coal fired power stations with a plan to phase out existing ones, a commitment to deep short term cuts to our greenhouse pollution emissions, and a dramatic increase in renewable energy solutions’’.
