Sun worshippers beware. While using sunscreen to block dangerous UV rays, you may be exposing yourself to a new danger. Sunscreen manufacturers are adding nanoparticles to sunscreens to make sun-blocking ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide rub on clear instead of white. These nanoparticles are being added without appropriate labeling or reliable safety information—and they pose potential threats to human health.

For the first time, food companies will have to declare to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) when their products contain nanotechnology ingredients, additives, food processing aids or contaminants that could pose new toxicity risks, if the regulator’s proposed new standards are approved.

A poll of 1,010 people released today shows more than 9 in 10 Australians want safety checks on potentially toxic tiny food additives called nanoparticles. The poll was commissioned by Friends of the Earth Australia (FoE) and carried out by Essential Research.
