Food Film Festival set to open with chook-themed movies
Community environment group Friends of the Earth today released the program for it’s first food film festival “Feast of Film”. Saturday 18 July is the chicken-themed opening screening which features the Australian premiere of North American film Mad City Chickens. It is being screened with the classic documentary The Natural History of the Chicken and an award-winning short.
“Feast of Film will extend over three weekends throughout July and August, each afternoon touching on a different aspect of where our food comes from. From chickens and farming in the cities, to sustainable agriculture and issues about genetic modification, this line-up of award-winning documentaries, animations and shorts cover the spectrum from hilarious to horrifying,” said organiser Joel Catchlove.
“With climate change, environmental degradation and economic crisis, communities all over the world are realising how vulnerable our food system really is, and are taking steps to build greater food security. We hope that these films will inspire more people in Adelaide to think about where our food comes from and how we can build a more sustainable food system,” said Mr. Catchlove.
All proceeds from Feast of Film will go towards “From Plains to Plate: the Future of Food in South Australia”, a food convergence planned for February 2010.
“From Plains to Plate is a tremendous opportunity to bring together community members with government and the food and farming sector to examine the challenges facing South Australia’s food system, and to initiate innovative community projects and policies to build a more equitable and sustainable food system,” said Friends of the Earth food campaigner Narelle Walker.
