An update, February 5th:

Below are images from the camp that Friends of the Earth Haiti is co-ordinating and an update on what is going on with FoE and it's work there:

The offices of Friends of the Earth Haiti (Haiti Survie) have also been destroyed, however, we are pleased to report that the director Aldrin Calixte and his colleagues and their family members have been accounted for.

Friends of the Earth Haiti plays a vital role within Haitian civil society, and more broadly the Caribbean. They carry out invaluable work on food sovereignty, deforestation and desertification, climate change adaptation, as well as international finance.

In the aftermath of the earthquake their work is focussing on the immediate relief effort. Working alongside other local non governmental organisations they are running two mobile clinics which are being supported by around 40 medics - 12 of whom are Haitian exiles who have returned from the United States to offer their support. The team's focus is on the most vulnerable people who have been affected by the earthquake.

In addition Friends of the Earth Haiti is distributing more than 100,000 litres of drinking water which is being delivered by a partner organisation based in the neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Please consider making a contribution today to assist Friends of the Earth Haiti in their emergency response to the situation and the subsequent rebuilding efforts.

January 13, 2010:

By now you will have heard news of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti yesterday.

From FoE US:
We have just received a message from Aldrin Calixte, the director of the Friends of the Earth group in the country, Haiti Survie. Aldrin reports that while he and his family are okay, several of his colleagues are unaccounted for and the Friends of the Earth office in Haiti has been destroyed.

We will reach out to you in coming weeks to let you know what Friends of the Earth members in the United States and elsewhere can do to help get our sister organisation up and running again, but at present, urgent humanitarian needs must be met.

Will you please consider joining me in making a contribution to one of the following organizations that can put your money to work immediately to provide food, water and medical care for earthquake victims?
