Tom Athanasiou - Climate Change - Greenhouse Development Rights by CamWalker — last modified 2007-08-12 20:15
Download an audio file from our public meeting on Greenhouse Development Rights with Tom Athanasiou. The world must rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions if we are to avoid dangerous climate change. But how can we do this while also facilitating a fair go for the developing world and bring a sense of international equity to the climate change debate? How can a rise in prosperity in the developing world be facilitated while reducing global emissions? Tom Athanasiou says the real climate change challenge is “holding global warming below a catastrophic level while preserving the right of all people to more than merely bare-bones ‘human development’.” Tom Athanasiou is executive director of EcoEquity (www.ecoquity.org), a US-based climate think-tank which works closely with church, aid agencies and environment organisations on greenhouse development rights.

This interview features Raj Patel, the author of "Stuffed and Starved: the hidden struggle for the control of the food system". Raj talks to Andrew Carter (Earth Matters, 3CR Radio) about the contradictions of our food system where millions of people are overweight at the same time as many go hungry. Raj links the injustices faced by peasants in the majority world and farmers in affluent countries like Australia by highlighting the major global food corporations who seek to control the food system. Taking aim at supermarkets and financial institutions which perpetuate these injustices and inequalities, Raj suggests ways we can bypass the industrial food system and get back in touch with what we eat and the people who produce it.
