During the Friends of the Earth Climate Connections speaking tour, members of Friends of the Earth Indonesia (WALHI) will travel to Australia to raise awareness about the push to expand export coal mining in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Come and hear about the issues, how you can support the campaign, and create connections with communities struggling against the global coal rush.

Australian coal miners are major investors in the rapidly expanding coal industry in Kalimantan. In the Upper Barito Basin, BHP Billiton and Cokal are fast tracking plans to clear rich tropical rainforests for open cut coal mines, and lobbying the Indonesian government to open up protected forests to do so. These plans threaten some of the most important rainforests in the world.

Coal expansion is also a major driver of climate change, water pollution, and undermines local communities, where indigenous connections to land are ongoing.

“The Barito watershed area is a source of life for residents, if the project continues, it will threaten the river.”

Arie Rompas, Executive Director, WALHI Central Kalimantan

"Allowing conversion of protected and conservation forests into the mining sector is a serious threat to the commitment to cut emissions”

Deddy Ratih, Bioregion and Climate Campaigner WALHI

“Coal is no longer suitable as an energy source given the damage it causes.”

Pius Ginting, Energy Campaigner, WALHI
