Bald Hills announcement welcomed

December 21 , 2006

National environmental group Friends of the Earth (FoE) has joined with other green organisations, the renewable energy industry and local communities in welcoming today's announcement on the Bald Hills Wind farm. Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell has approved the $220m Bald Hills project in South Gippsland.

The project had been blocked earlier because Senator Campbell said it posed a danger to the rare orange-bellied parrot.

Bald Hills Wind Farm Pty Ltd has made key changes to the turbine layout of the project and there will be strict conditions to protect the Orange-bellied Parrot and other threatened species in the area. The company will also contribute $30,000 per year to conservation-related actions for all threatened bird species along the South Gippsland coast for the life of the wind farm.

“Senator Campbell is to be congratulated for this decision” said FoE campaigns co-ordinator Cam Walker. “In the light of growing evidence of the reality of global warming, we need to see increased action by all levels of government on this most pressing of problems. A commitment to a Mandatory Renewable Energy of at least 20% in the short term would help create the business opportunities for similar developments elsewhere in Australia.”
