Dutton's nuclear fantasy is dead. Time to get on with the job with renewables

Australia has voted and delivered a stunning rejection of Dutton’s nuclear fantasy, a rejection of nasty misinformation and culture war, and a clear mandate for Albanese to get on with the job with renewables.

This is an incredible opportunity to deliver a truly just and ambitious shift to renewables that must be seized and expanded on in Albanese's second term.

Dutton’s absurd nuclear proposal will now be swept into the dustbin of history. The Coalition’s outlandish anti-renewables attacks have failed.

Energy was front and centre this election – but it cannot remain a simple culture war issue.

Australia’s ageing coal fired generators are all closing in the next decade and we need real solutions to our ageing energy grid.

PM Albanese now has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform our energy system and modernise industry with renewables while supporting households and businesses to go fully electric. This is an invitation to get the shift to renewables done, and done well.

Labor’s $2.3 billion home battery plan is a great policy – but this alone is not enough. We need ambitious policy to support the development of an offshore wind industry in Australia, investment in green metals manufacturing, and much more to really tackle climate change.

This will not happen overnight and requires a major plan for training the workforce of the future, securing local jobs and manufacturing, seeding new businesses and putting regional communities at the centre of this change through programs like Local Energy Hubs.

Communities fought hard this election.

We’d like to give a special shoutout to local groups like Good for the Gong in the Illawarra who have been championing offshore wind, and Voices of the Valley in Gippsland and the seven regions resisting Dutton’s nuclear fantasy. These groups, along with many others, have been on the frontlines of a difficult fight, building the community power our movement needs to win big change.

As the ALP begins its second term, that community and movement power is as important as ever, if we’re going to seize this moment and ensure that politicians keep community interests at the heart of energy policy.

There is more work to be done but for now, let's celebrate this incredible moment for renewables, and take stock on how we can deliver real change in this term of government.
