NWTAS for Clean Oceans is a community group based in northwest Tasmania.
They have pledged to commit time, energy and resources to challenge the federal Environment Minister’s controversial decision to allow industrial fish farming to continue unchecked in World Heritage-recognised Macquarie Harbour, on Tasmania’s west coast.
Macquarie Harbour is the last remaining habitat anywhere in the world for globally unique and endangered Maugean Skate. Maugean skate are recognised for their World Heritage value because they have been around since the time of the dinosaurs.
Industrial fish farming in Macquarie Harbour is recognised as the primary threat to the Maugean Skate.
The group began a case against the Environment Minister in Federal Court in February 2026 and are raising funds to cover some legal expenses, expert witnesses and court costs.
